Tooth sensitivity occurs when the enamel that protects our teeth gets thinner, or when gum recession occurs, exposing the underlying surface, the dentin, thus, reducing the protection the enamel and gums provide to the tooth and root.
Signs & Symptoms
If hot, cold, sweet or very acidic foods and drinks, or breathing in cold air, makes your teeth or a tooth sensitive or painful, then you may have sensitive teeth.
Causes of Sensitive Teeth
- Consuming too many acidic foods/beverages
- Brushing the teeth too hard causing wearing out of tooth enamel
- Frequent brushing
- Gum disease
- Grinding of teeth
- Excessive use of whitening products
- Tooth decay
- Aftereffects of a dental treatment
Treatment for Sensitive Teeth
Treatment for sensitive teeth depends on the underlying cause. At Lotus Dental Clinic, our dentists or dental hygienists may recommend the use of desensitizing toothpastes. These are specially-formulated to make your teeth less sensitive and help prevent tooth decay through its fluoride content. They may also suggest in-office fluoride gel application, or dental treatments like fillings, crowns or bonding to correct a flaw that triggers sensitivity. If your case is severe and cannot be treated by other means, our endodontist may perform root canal treatment to eliminate the problem.
If you experience any of the symptoms of tooth sensitivity, be sure to visit your dentist or dental hygienist immediately. For more questions on tooth sensitivity, contact us: +971 4 3971667 / +971 564556625
